Why Mychart and patient portals are problematic

By

Have you noticed the flaws in online patient portals yet?

Let’s start off with the incessant emails. Got blood drawn? Cue the 6 lab results that they can pull from 1-2 viles of blood and email you about each test individually. Have an appointment scheduled? There’s going to be at least 2-3 emails about that including emails about pre-check in.

Our emails are being bombarded by marketing emails daily. Apologies to my former customers for my use of email marketing (it’s a regret of mine as it’s annoying as fuck as a customer).

We are being harassed by politicians and companies for money in emails. Never mind the parents who get a thousand emails per school year- it’s just too much for some people to even process (I have 50,000 unread emails between my 3 accounts, I know I’m not the only one who just can’t keep up with the multiple email accounts and nonsense I’m spammed with)

The over use of the email notifications can cause people to miss important information they actually needed. What happened to calling us if something is wrong?

Which brings me to my next point: WHY THE FUCK DO THEY SEND REAL TIME RESULTS TO ER PATIENTS WHILE THEY ARE IN THE HOSPITAL???

Everyone has google and anxiety now a days and when they are sending people a bunch of labs with information that they can’t interpret it’s causing people to absolutely panic.

Next on my list of beefs with this is cyber security. There’s been multiple hospital systems that have been hacked. Can we stop acting like HIPPA is a thing anymore when our entire medical files are all on digital format that can easily be hacked? They charge you a kidney to print your medical files (thanks capitalism🙄)

Social security data was messed around with this year for christs sake- and we want every personal detail stored on a format that could not only be hacked but also could be just totally wiped out? I get digital is convenient but at a certain point it’s a bit foolish to just rely on technology actually working and it being stored safely.

I sound like a boomer pushing for paper instead of digital but with everything going AI and all dystopian I’m seeing more and more flaws in how we are operating that more people need to be aware of.

Those in the medical field- can a patient refuse mychart and be called for all the information needed? Like do we even have an option here to opt out? Does every office have paper copies of every file/x ray/scan?

Tell me to adjust my tinfoil hat if you will but I just don’t like what these portals have turned into and I’m seeing more harm than good.

Did I miss any takes?
