Failures I Made Owning a Small Business part 4

By

I feel like this series could go on forever if I’m being honest. I’ve made more mistakes in my business than I used to care to admit to, now looking back I can see the lessons learned at least.

Picking a niche/set purpose for the business was another big aspect I failed with. In 2020 getting started we made primarily infant clothing and the cloth diapers. Over time we ended up morphing into an inappropriate adult shop. Switching the products we offered over and over again did me absolutely no favors. There was no consistency- we changed brand names even at one point.

It’s hard to build a consistent client base when you’re flip flopping what products you’re even offering; but again I needed to do things the hardest way humanly possible. What I can tell you is that whatever niche you pick, make sure it’s something you actually give a fuck about. With the amount of hours a small business takes from your life it’s essential you’re not doing something you absolutely hate.

When it comes to offering products, a big issue I had was assuming products would sell and pre-buying merchandise that I would in turn end up getting stuck with. Insert my famous saying “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. Many times in order to get rid of these products I foolishly stock piled I would end up having to discount them so much to the point they were a loss.

Taking a marketing course made me realize that my entire business was doomed to fail from the start. Making clothing in a small scale manner like I am isn’t some necessity or making the world/peoples lives better in any form. Anyone with $500 and 3 brain cells could do what I do, it’s not art. It’s an over saturated market and nothing that separates me from the millions of people who did the same thing when the pandemic hit. I don’t say that to be negative but having unrealistic expectations set me up for disappointment when I fell flat on my face.
