Failures I Made Owning a Small Business part 5

By

Admitting all these failures has been almost therapeutic in a sense. Between my tax boo boos to my stupidity in over buying of products that did not sell- I’d rather share this and bring some light to it. Maybe- just maybe, it’ll prevent someone else from making the same poor choices I did.

The topic I want to go over in this part of the series is a semi touchy one: trademark and copyright infringements. It’s a messy game. We have all seen the small shops offering Disney products or the latest on trend movie/show.

I learned this lesson the hard way in 2022 when my website literally froze my funds and wouldn’t allow me access to my money until I resolved the issue. Disney literally has bots that the sole purpose is to scan the internet for listings with the words/pictures of their products. Yeah yeah yeah, I’m aware listing them was a mistake on my end- but the quickness at which they attacked my Shopify store was eye opening. Unfortunately there’s some greedy fucks who have trademarked basic words/phrases so it is important you check what’s been newly approved.

I haven’t checked in awhile but at one point some crafter had trademarked “boy mom”, it’s unbelievable but when making products and creating/using digital designs that is all things you have to look into. I never bothered with getting an LLC since there’s not much liability in people dying from clothing but I should have done it to protect myself from lawsuits with the way some people abuse the civil court options.

It’s pretty insane people waste time and years in court over words/designs on merchandise, seems like priorities are ass backwards. Can’t get justice in the criminal court system but you can sue someone pretty easily if you have the money and patience to do so.
